Prime Minister signs for Atherstone Town as 'Hand of Boris' now riding on team's hopes of reaching Wembley final in the FA Vase

Local News by Nick Hudson 28th Feb 2020

Atherstone Town have pulled off a dramatic last-minute 'big name' signing for tomorrow's history-making cup clash with Consett AFC.

And now the stakes couldn't be higher for Wembley-dreaming Adders – with Prime Minister Boris Johnson watching on from both wings.

The 'hand of Boris' will be on a wager between North Warwickshire MP Craig Tracey and his North West Durham parliamentary colleague Richard Holden who represents the constituency of North West Durham where the Adders' opponents hail from.

Town-mad supporter Craig, 45, is confident the "mighty" Sheepy Road side will "come out on top" when the two sides lock horns at the Mark Webster Community Stadium in the quarter-final of the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon.

It's the furthest Town CFC have reached in the competition – and it's the same for their Northern League Division One opponents.

The Atherstone-based MP was so sure of victory for his team he decided to up the stakes on a friendly bet with Consett-supporting Richard.

Mr Holden, who only took his seat at Westminster in the general election in December, has already tasted victory in two wagers with MPs of Consett's rivals on their way to the last eight of the competition.

He got a beer off South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa after Consett triumphed 3-1 at home to Lutterworth Town and in the last round got an ice cream from Dover MP Natalie Elphicke after a convincing 2-0 win over Deal Town.

So the 45-year-old North Warwickshire MP decided to go one better and offer a House of Commons bottle of wine as the spoils for the winning parliamentarian "signed by the Prime Minister himself".

The victor has promised to auction off the bottle to a local charity of their choice.

Super-confident Craig added: "Fingers crossed for a great game and the right result."

Will that be Wine-Nil to the Adders then?
