LOCAL HONOURS KEEP ROLLING IN FOR WORLD WAR TWO VETERAN WITH MIDAS TOUCH FOR FUNDRAISING

LIKE NHS hero Captain Tom Moore – they are everyone's favourite.

And Twycross Zoo bestowed a special honour on the national 'man of the day' – by naming a penguin chick after the World War Two veteran.

Atherstone's world-famous wildlife sanctuary announced this afternoon its newest arrival would be known as 'Captain Tom'.

The man who set out to raise £1,000 for the NHS by doing 100 laps of his back garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, has at the last count garnered in excess of £31 million for the UK's revered national institution.

Captain Tom – given an honorary colonel title – turned 100 today and Nub News revealed earlier a host of best wishes from locals and tributes from afar including having a foal named him, a train and locomotive engine, a special postbox installed near his home, made an honorary England cricketer plus a RAF fly-past to mark the special day – not forgetting being the oldest person to top the music charts.

And after narrowly missing out on having a new-born antelope named after him in a Facebook page poll, the zoo today came up with an award which required no required no poll battle.

It posted: "Happy 100th birthday #ColonelTomMoore from all of us at Twycross Zoo.

"Our newest arrival, a penguin chick, is named after you in your honour – photo to come soon."

Meanwhile, the boss of George Eliot Hospital – whose nurses sent a video and picture message to the centenarian – added his good wishes to the 140,000 cards the army vet received today.

CEO Glen Burley said Captain Moore was an "absolute inspiration" to the NHS but it was "time to put your feet up".
