Talented local artist Bethany Coopey uses themes of nostalgia to capture Warwickshire spots

By Elle Morgan 31st Jul 2021

Bethany Coopey is a first-year Fine Art student at De Montfort University, whose work already resembles that of veteran and well-established artists.

She has been working with the astounding work ethic typical of creatives throughout the pandemic, creating pieces that astound locals with their familiarity to well-known spots.

Local areas, such as Clock Hill Bridge, have been captured, as well as Gouche paintings of streets in Hartshill at sunset.

The talented artist said, "Really, I was experimenting with these paintings and drawings.

"For one of the projects, I was using the theme of 'nostalgia' so I thought I'd work with views of the local area to capture places I knew growing up.

"My Fine Art course includes printmaking, painting, sculpting, and even Art History. It is narrowed down in the second year at DMU."

Just as Sylvia Hankin's usual theme is the serenity of waterways, Bethany often takes inspiration from local areas in Warwickshire.

Sylvia Hankin also painted around Warwickshire and Birmingham, being originally born in London.

The adventurous Sylvia lived, painted and traveled all over England on a 50ft narrow-boat.

It's always intriguing to sit down with a local artist in order to celebrate the true talent of Warwickshire, particularly after such challenging times.

During and after many international crises and periods of history, such as World War I or the Industrial Revolution, painters and writers have gifted the public with stunning creations.

"This, this is what I see," artists have expressed for centuries, and just in this way, local artists celebrate the area of Warwickshire. Many people have been confined to their counties over the past year, turning to the natural landscape for solace and daily walks.

It was a pleasure to sit down with one of those creatives, Nuneaton-born Bethany, who was inspired by Sylvia Hankin. Readers of the Nub News look forward to hearing about further updates, regarding the beginning of this artist's career.
