Police in Atherstone looking for walking wounded from abandoned car 'lucky to escape injury'
COPS LAUNCH INQUIRY INTO VEHICLE THAT LEFT THE CARRIAGEWAY AND ENDED UP IN A FIELD
IN FOUR DAYS, ANTI-SPEED CAMPAIGN ALREADY REPORTED AND CAUTIONED MORE THAN 100 DRIVERS
POLICE in Atherstone have admitted that an accident where a vehicle left the carriageway and finished on its side in a field could have been "a lot worse" for its occupants.
Investigations are underway after officers found the abandoned wreckage in Merevale Lane, Atherstone.
The roof the Mini was stoved in and debris littered in the undergrowth.
E shift on the Atherstone and Coleshill team said the vehicle was empty and those travelling in it thought to be "walking wounded".
No one else is believed to have been injured in the road traffic collision.
A police spokesman, warning about excess speed, said: "This could have been a lot worse."
The accident came a week after police issued a "slow down" warning to bank holiday drivers to be watch out for potential new hazards – born out of lifestyle changes in dealing with the ongoing impact of coronavirus.
Police are calling for extra care as vehicles are now sharing the roads with more people who have turned to "cycling, running or walking" for their exercise during the current pandemic
Meanwhile, Warwickshire Police reported 93 drivers to the courts, arrested three people and seized six vehicles during the first four days of a national speeding campaign. Another 24 drivers were given warnings for behaviour observed by officers on the county's roads.
One vehicle was stopped after doing more than 130mph on the M40 and another doing 126mph on the A46.
