North Warwickshire Covid cases continue to rise despite lockdown

North Warwickshire's rate of COVID infection is continuing to rise steeply, with any impact of the latest national lockdown as yet failing to manifest itself.

The borough's rate of infection on 5th November was 284 cases per 100,000 population. This has now risen to 393, with 42 additional cases being confirmed yesterday (17th November).

As well as the overall number of infections, the Borough Council is concerned about the higher than average infections amongst the over 60 population as there is a much higher risk of people needing hospital care in that age group.

If the North Warwickshire infection rate does not come down by the time lockdown is lifted, the Council fear that the borough will be placed in the 'very high' tier of restrictions, or tier 3.

This would mean that fewer businesses and hospitality venues would be allowed to reopen.

Leader of the Council David Wright said, "Everyone is very keen to see our rates of infection reduce and we are asking therefore that people redouble their efforts in reducing contacts with other people.

"The people of North Warwickshire have been excellent in their response to this crisis and we are very grateful for this but we need to get infections down, particularly in those over the age of 60 as we do not want our health care system to be overwhelmed.

"We need to avoid seeing people as far as possible therefore in order to avoid further health and economic impacts."
