With the 2021 Atherstone Ball Game regrettably but understandably cancelled, we have had a look back at some of the images from last year's event.

This is one of four galleries we will be sharing from the 821st year.

Here are the words written back in 2020 by Nick Hudson:

It's hard work waiting for the off – as hundreds below the ball game balcony will testify.

The Shrovetide crowds were happy to bide their time for the 3pm start.

Numbers built up in the last hour until the crowd below the Atherstone Conservative Club first floor was a seething mass.

The frontline was eventually filled with the players who had lived for the moment from 12 months before.
