Drivers in Atherstone town centre want more signs to warn of 'nightmare' mini roundabouts

Worried motorists are appealing for action after claiming the majority of mini roundabouts in Atherstone are like playing the National Lottery – without a chance winning.

And a plea has gone out for additional warning signs to be placed close to the one of the busiest – crossing the junctions of Coleshill Road, Station Street, Coleshill Street and South Street.

All four roads are important thoroughfares to either exiting the town, leading to major stores, to the borough council offices, or directly to the town's main street .

Driver Alan Forman wants a 'Give way to the right' sign at the bottom of the four-way roundabout, complaining his daily journey is "plagued" with cars emerging onto the traffic island from the direction of the Co-op and Aldi stores "without looking or stopping".

He told the Atherstone and Mancetter Community News forum: "Luckily I've become very careful but hoot my horn or gesticulate wildly."

But his daughter, a health visitor in Atherstone, was not so fortunate – involved in a shunt with a van two weeks ago which saw her car written off as a result.

Danny Kelly agrees, adding: "That mini roundabout is a nightmare. It's a lottery and everyone either moves at the same time, or sits waiting for others to move.

"And it's not just that roundabout though, as I have experienced the same at four out of the five mini roundabouts I can think of in Atherstone." Warwickshire County Councillor Neil Dirveiks told Nub News he would look into the matter. Atherstone's county representative said: "The Highway Code is quite specific that motorists approaching an island must give way to traffic from the right. "Putting up a sign would be embellishing what is already the law of the road." But he added: "If Mr Forman contacts me on [email protected] I would be happy to discuss the issue with him."
