NHS heroes at Atherstone's main hospital have been climbing the equivalent of the Himalayan peaks these past weeks as they do battle with the devastating impact of global virus scourge Covid-19.

The frontline staff at the George Eliot and the maternity wing have come face to face with a killer infection that has claimed 87 lives in the hospital, hundreds across Warwickshire and nearly 3,800 in the Midlands.

Yesterday the nation – led by new dad Boris Johnson – stood in a minute's solemn silence to remember 83 NHS staff and 23 carers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in treating coronavirus patients.

Team Eliot observed the tribute in honour of their fallen colleagues across the UK.

Now Nub News can reveal one of its doctors took on a mighty challenge to raise funds for the benefit of both patients and staff on the delivery suite in Heath End Road, Nuneaton.

It was back in 2018 that Dr Nyo Khin climbed Mount Snowdon with her partner Clive – specifically to help those she works with and for.

Now the maternity unit's doctors, nurses plus new and expectant mums can 'see' the fruits of Dr Khin's labours.

The money raised by the consultant brought three Smart televisions for the delivery suite and will be used for staff training purposes and for wellbeing.

Staff will be able to have important down time watching TV and recharging their own batteries, the hospital said.

Women and their families on the suite will also benefit from the televisions which will also be used for parent preparation classes and to watch favourite programmes on the ward.

Head of midwifery Claire Price said: "This is such a wonderful act of kindness. "We are really grateful and the new TVs will be a great resource to the maternity team and our parents alike." One more thing Dr Khin is good at – baking cakes, as our inset picture reveals.
