Chairman Brian Hernney beamed a “pitch perfect” smile as he announced the weather is no longer the obstacle to FA Vase underdogs Atherstone Town making it down Wembley Way.
Storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge has done their damnedest – only the small matter of Northern Football League Division One Consett AFC stand in the way of a place in the semi-final in a fortnight.
Waterlogged Sheepy Road has dried its soggy surface under the welcoming blue skies of the last 48 hours as the club’s ‘boss for all seasons’ told Nub News nothing will stop the game going ahead.
Chairman Henney said: “It’s looking good . Game on, regardless of what happens between now and 3pm tomorrow.
“The pitch is in perfect condition. No inspection will be held until the referee arrives on Saturday afternoon for the game.
“I’m 100 per cent confident.”
As for actual game itself, all of Atherstone and beyond the wooden boundary of the Mark Webster Community Stadium will be willing on the 10th tier side to another upset in a competition which has the golden prize of a trip to Wembley.
Get past Consett AFC and ninth tier Toolstation Western League Premier Division side Bitton AFC awaits in a two-legged semi-final tie on consecutive Saturdays – March 21 and 28. They disposed of Wroxham 4-0 in the round of the last 16.
The weather has meant six teams currently remain in the contest at a point where only four should be taking to the field of play tomorrow. Favourites Hebburn Town await the winners of Corinthian FC and Leighton Town.
The Adders chairman said only long-term injured Alex Naughton was a definite non-starter with replacement journeyman striker Jordan Francis “very likely to play some part in the tie”.
All Adders fans will enter the ground through the Sheepy Road turnstile. There will be strictly no entry for home supporters at the Rowland Way side of the ground.
They will be greeted by a large notice warning them the club will not tolerate racial abuse and obcene language – ready to report offneder sto the police and dish out lifetime bans from the rgound.
There will be limited parking around the ground, so the club has urged fans to allow ample time to gain entry.
Bates’s Butchers are the game sponsors for the day, Atherstone Garage and MOT centre will sponsor the programme and Gary and James Fox will again sponsor the match ball. Cannon Sports Nuneaton is supplying the matchday pennant for the massive FA Vase clash.
